Super Smash brothers is a franchise that has captured the hearts and minds of Nintendo fans and gamers in general for over 20 years now. With several ultra-successful sequels that include beloved characters from all over different gaming universes and that special Nintendo polish, it’s tough to blame Sony for wanting to cash in on that success with their own version of the 2.5D brawler franchise.

And why not? By 2009 The Playstation catalogue had seen three home consoles, a relatively successful portable system, and tons of highly respected unique characters associated with each one. Sony also had a small army of excellent developers on their team, and by that same time, the Playstation 3 had already started to turn it’s sales around and was actually giving the 360 some real competition.

Plus, with their being so many iterations of Smash Brothers that seemingly got better and better with each subsequent game, it was an easy format to copy and more than likely looked like a slam dunk on paper. PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale is a ridiculous name for a game. So ridiculous that Fortnite used it for a while as Fortnite Battle Royale, but then dropped that just for Fortnite because of how silly it was. Released in late 2012 for the PS3 and totally forgotten PSVita, PS All Stars is essentially a Super Smash Bros clone, but with PlayStation characters. Well, some. No Crash, no Spyro, no Tomba / Tombi, Sora, ICO, or even Bubsy. Except, as Caddy and ScottTheWoz find out together, it’s basically Smash Bros, but not as good. With the release of the amazing Super Smash Bros Ultimate recently on the Nintendo Switch, get ready for a blast from the past as we try to play Smash but end up stuck with this game instead in our PS All Stars review! Or Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale review. Whatever. This is also much different than the Current Quickies version of the review Caddy did, so don’t get your hopes up. Cyoar.
